Leadership Development

Purpose-Led, Embodied Leadership

In our changing world, progressive businesses are altering both their external structure and their internal relationships. The concept of leadership is moving towards that of a collective responsibility, with each role offering leadership opportunity. For small towns, this merger of leadership and teamwork is not a new idea, indeed, it is a historical reality. Small businesses have tapped into their employees’ skills and handed them additional responsibilities just to stay afloat. I know businesses who have even tapped into their customers skills on occasion! We’ve got that part down, and we can now use it to respond to emerging changes in technology, the global market, environmental and social issues, including workforce diversity. Knowing how to respond effectively to change is essential.

Change is experienced by one’s body. We not only think about it, but we have feelings and bodily sensations in response to it. Our response to change also happens through our body. Our bodily awareness affects our emotional intelligence and physical presence. Leadership in times of change necessitates being aware of what we are thinking, feeling, and sensing in our bodies. With that integrated knowledge we can intentionally show up for others in a way that is most congruous with how we desire to be. When we do so, we positively affect our mood and our perceptions, and influence the response of others to us. One achieves this powerful form of leadership solely through intentional, committed practice and presence.
